When it comes to tough conditions for ventilation systems, it doesn't become much tougher than in swimming pool facilities. Over the last few years the trend has been to go from swimming arenas to pool recreation lands and with this change the temperature has been increased and the environment has become even more aggressive to metals.
The air in swimming pool facilities is often very humid with hypochlorous acid (HClO) added to the pools to keep the water clean. When the hypochlorous acid comes in contact with water it forms the highly corrosive hydrochloric acid (HCl) which is harmful to most metals.
If it can be guaranteed that the ventilation system won’t come in contact with water, neither on the outside nor on the inside, galvanized steel is recommended for all parts of the system. The most important aspect when designing a swimming pool facility is to keep the ventilation system dry and special care must be taken to:
Aluminum duct can also be a preferred material to prevent corrosion from occurring but the finish, strength, delivery time and so on will not be of the same high quality as the galvanized system.
For the suspension of the system products made of galvanized steel are recommended.
When it cannot be guaranteed that the system will be completely protected from water, the system will have to be coated to fulfill corrosion category C4. This will have to be done at the building site after the system has been fully installed to make sure that the system is completely protected from humidity.
Water Technics can provide pre painted ducts of very high quality but there will always be weak points that have to be taken care of at the building site like cutting of ducts, screw holes and hangers.
Neither stainless steel nor aluminum zinc is preferred for use is in these facilities.
